For acne sufferers, cleansing is the most important part of the skincare regime but not for the reason you think. A common myth is that acne is caused by poor skin hygiene and so you need to use every oil-stripping, antiseptic face wash out there. In actual fact, you need to use the gentlest cleanser as acne is a sensitive soul. And there’s a lot more where that myth came from too…
No stripping please
No no, we’re not suggesting you’re exhibitionists. In the cleansing sense, avoid anything that’s too harsh or stripping. Drying out skin might feel like the answer but it will actually cause skin to panic and pump out more of its own oil to compensate, which can then can clog pores and you know how that story ends. Alcohol-free cleansers like La Roche Posay Effaclar Cleansing Gel or Vichy Purete Thermale 3-In-1 One Step Cleanser will gently cleanse without leaving skin feeling tight and stretched.

No need to scrub
We know it’s natural to want to scrub at skin in the hope it will rub out spots, but it will actually only make the skin more inflamed. Cleansing gels are much gentler than harsh scrubs then massage into skin with warm water (too hot or too cold throws skin even further off balance).
A double cleanse just means you cleanse your skin twice, back to back. The first cleanse will remove make-up and daily dirt, the second will be able to get right to the bottom of pores to clear out any lurking cloggers.
Pat pat pat
Remember how we said we said that acne skin should come with a ‘fragile: handle with care’ label? So to dry skin, gently pat it dry. Rubbing can cause irritation and inflammation (like scrubbing skin), which sends the acne cycle up a gear or two.
