Lots of things can cause dry, chapped lips. The weather, your diet and even some medications and treatments, like roaccutane, can wreak havoc. And there is nothing more distracting than having sore, cracked lips. To help you find the one, we’ve rounded up our favourites for every need and occasion…

The Best Lip Balm For Dry Lips

Nuxe Rêve de Miel, £9.50

This French pharmacy favourite translates to ‘honey dream’ and is velvety thick; it’s like a cashmere jumper for your lips. It contains vitamin E, shea butter and sweet almond oil to nourish the delicate skin on your lips and prevent dryness. You only need a tiny bit, so a tub will last you for months.

The Best Lip Balm For Chapped/Cracked Lips

Blistex MedPlus Repairing Lip Balm with SPF 15, £2.69

When your lips aren’t just chapped, but cracked or bleeding from merely smiling. This miraculous cooling jelly texture restores sore lips back to good health. It’s got menthol inside, which sounds like it could sting on sore lips, but it soothes and cools as it repairs, while the jojoba oil and cocoa butter provide long-lasting hydration (put this on overnight, and it’ll still be on in the morning, no lie). The SPF will also protect your lips from damage too. We can’t recommend it enough.

The Best Lip Balm With SPF

Nivea Lip Care Sun SPF 30, £3.29

Not just for days at the beach (we know you’ve heard it all before, but SPF should be worn all year round to protect your skin and lips not just from premature ageing, but to help prevent skin cancer too). Nivea’s protects against the sun and delightfully smells of sun cream. For day-to-day protection off the beach, we like Carmex’s Cherry Lip Balm that has a shield of SPF 15 (smells delicious too).

The Best Tinted Lip Balm

Fresh’s Sugar Tinted Lip Treatment SPF 15, £19.50

Some days you don’t want the heaviness of a lipstick, yet you still crave a bit of colour. That’s when we reach for Fresh’s Sugar Lip Treatment SPF 15. It comes in 12 different shades, all the way from poppy reds and bright corals to subdued nudes – there’s a shade for everyone. Each one contains nourishing oils and antioxidants too so you can colour and care for your lips in one swift swipe.

The Best Natural Lip Balm

Burt’s Bees Beeswax Lip Balm, £3.99

So natural, you could (almost) eat it. Containing a winning combination of beeswax, vitamin E and peppermint oil, lips are left as soft as a satin pillow, along with a refreshing minty tingle. We can’t quite believe it’s 100% natural - doesn’t contain parabens, phthalates, petrolatum or SLS – it’s the bees knees of natural balms.

The Best Organic Lip Balm

BY SARAH London Organic Lip Balm, £12

This 100% natural and organic lip balm leaves your lips oh so soft. Thanks to the coconut and apricot oils, it lovingly melts onto the lips to deliver a protective shield that locks in moisture. As with all of the BY SARAH products, it's clearly labelled so you can tell exactly what's inside – no more scrutinizing long and confusing ingredients lists.

The Best Tasting Lip Balm

LUSH Whipstick Lip Balm, £6.95

One for those who used to wear Lip Smackers at school, because they tasted so de-lish. It would be frowned upon to get a Lip Smacker out at work, but luckily LUSH’s Whipstick is the adult’s alternative and tastes like chocolate orange (think Jaffa cakes, minus the calories). We have to give a special mention to the Reeses Lip Balm (it smells just like the chocolate peanut butter cups) and Glossier’s Birthday Balm Dot Com has a hint of birthday cake frosting about it. Lip-lickingly good.

The Best Drugstore Lip Balm

Vaseline Lip Therapy Tin Aloe Vera, £1.95

It’s a classic for a reason. The Original is on of the UK’s best selling beauty products. And at £1.95, you can snap all variations up (keep one in your bag, one at your desk, one in the car…). However, the Aloe Vera version is the highest rated on Boots for its moisturising magic and delicious scent. Simple, but effective.

The Best Lip Balm for Under Lipstick

eos Lip Balm, £6.50

Sometimes you need a little something before your lipstick or lip liner, but nothing gooey and thick. That’s exactly where eos (which stands for Evolution Of Smooth, FYI) comes in. It’s intensely hydrating, but lightweight too, so it absorbs quickly. Your lips will be perfectly prepped for make-up and the ball applicator is cute too. The Sweet Mint flavour is a firm favourite among lip balm aficionados.

The Best Lip Balm For Cold Sores

Prevasore, £6.95

These uninvited party guests are a real pain. When a cold sore arises we immediately slather this on to speed up recovery time. The cooling green gel has a minty feel that instantly soothes discomfort and helps improve moisture retention, which shows cold sores the door.

The Best Lip Mask

Clinique Pep-Start Pout-Restoring Night Mask, £16

You regularly use a face mask, no? So why not use one for your lips too? Clinique’s Night Mask is super thick (you have to give the tube a hefty squeeze) meaning it cloaks your lips in an indulgent coating that lasts overnight. Expect to wake up to a new pair of lips.

Now your lips are nice and pampered, why not find the perfect shade of red lipstick for your skin, hair and eye colour? It’s scarily accurate…
